The Power of Small Studios: Agility, Intimacy, Impact

We’ve shaped our studio around a simple idea: stay flexible, stay close to the work and stay focused on what really matters, which is delivering the right outcomes for the people we work with.

Rather than building out a fixed team with one way of working, we take a more responsive approach. For some projects, we collaborate with other creatives to bring in new perspectives or specialist skills. On others, we’re the ones joining forces with in-house teams or other agencies to help bring clarity, direction or momentum. The key is knowing what’s needed, when it’s needed and being able to move quickly to make it happen.

This way of working gives us room to focus on craft while staying connected to the bigger picture. It means we can work directly with business leaders, founders and marketing teams to understand what’s really at stake and then build the right creative response around it.

No layers, no lag, just meaningful collaboration that gets to the point.

In an article published at the back end of 2024 in Design Week, Emma Sexton goes into more detail.

”The use of freelancers allows [agencies] to scale up fast for big projects and scale down again quickly to cope with the ebbs and flows of project-based work… It’s not about doing more work; it’s about doing the right work”

This shift away from bloated structures toward leaner, more focused teams is opening up a more sustainable, more purposeful way of running a studio.

This shift reflects a broader trend, in that clients are looking for clarity, speed and agile partnerships, not just headcount.

At the same time, talented designers and strategists increasingly seek variety and autonomy, working across different types of projects with people they respect.

We lean into that.

It keeps us agile. It keeps us honest.

And it lets us take on projects where we know we can make a difference. Whether that’s helping a growing brand find its identity or refining the UX on a product about to launch.

We’re proud to support smaller businesses who want to work directly with the people doing the work, not just overseeing it. And we’re equally comfortable collaborating with larger teams who need a focused partner to bring energy and clarity to a complex brief.

What this gives our clients is the ability to move fast without compromising on depth or detail. We can embed quickly, ask the right questions and tailor each team to the project, whether that means bringing in a motion specialist, a strategist or a developer. It's a more deliberate, collaborative process that leads to better thinking and sharper execution.

It also allows us to say yes to the right kind of work. The kind of work that challenges us, stretches ideas and builds meaningful, long-term value, not just deliverables.

By staying lean, we stay invested in the outcome. And ultimately, that’s what makes the work better… for everyone involved.

We don’t measure success by headcount. For us, success is doing work that matters, with people we respect and ideas we believe in. If that means staying small and choosing where we show up, then we’re exactly where we want to be.
